Twitter

This website is not intended to ridicule Elon Musk, but rather highlight the harm to society caused by billionaire oligarches by showing why it is unwise to place so much power, influence, and admiration into the hands of a man who clearly appears to be a narcissist and clearly appears to have the mental abilities of an arrogant selfish bullying eight year old boy.

The first 10-20 tweets in my timeline every day are from Elon Musk even though I do not follow him.

The next big batch of tweets are from the biggest Musk fan account, Donald Trump, and famous far right commentators.

I have to scroll fairly far through my timeline before I see any liberal accounts that I follow or any musicians.

Before the Musk takeover, musicians were the primary people I saw in my timeline. I spent most of my time conversing with other musicians, mostly independent musicians.

Now I rarely see anything from musicians. No I mostly just see white supremacist tweets.

It amazes me how many people fall for this conman.

Musk controversially acquired Twitter for $44 billion [behind paywall link] in October 2022, handing him control of one of the world’s largest social media brands. Immediately after his purchase, there were major concerns over a few changes he made to the platform, which he rebranded as X. —Elon Musk’s most controversial moments, The Week, 18 Oct 2024

Antisemitic and racist tweets spiked after Musk’s acquisition; in the first 24 hours after his purchase, “over 1200 tweets and retweets” had spread antisemitism, the Anti-Defamation League said. Hateful rhetoric towards Black people also increased, with The Washington Post [behind paywall link] finding a 500% increase in the use of the N-word on X just half a day after Musk’s purchase. —Elon Musk’s most controversial moments, The Week, 18 Oct 2024

Note that Musk’s claim that those they view as liberals counting the use of the word “nigger” supposedly shows that those doing the counting are the racists.

Note that The Weeks’ use of the phrase “N-word” is ambiguous in a language with tens of thousands of words that start with the letter N. Strange self-censorship.

Musk himself also used the platform to spread hate, and tweeted a link to an article spreading conspiracy theories about the attack on Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. While Musk deleted the tweet hours later, his message “echoed a wider effort by far-right influencers and some conservatives to downplay and spread baseless theories about the attack,” Insider said. —Elon Musk’s most controversial moments, The Week, 18 Oct 2024

When Elon Musk acquired Twitter and changed its name to X, he promptly went about stripping its capacity for content moderation, reinstating extremist accounts, and boosting the reach and visibility of the worst trolls. I have heard many blithe rationalizations of the pragmatic and even salutary benefits of “knowing what people really think.” But the pervasiveness and normalization of what was, until very recently, niche and stigmatized bigotry has been astonishing to witness. Although there was plenty of racism on the internet during Trump’s first and second campaigns, it wasn’t this ubiquitous on mainstream networks such as Twitter. On Musk’s X, the racism has no become so relentless and self-confident that it amounts to a genuine qualitative difference.—Elon Musk is Debasing American Society, The Atlantic, by Thomas Chatterton Williams, 20 September 2024

I don’t like Musk force feeding me with white supremacy tweets. At the same time, I support the right for everyone to speak, even white supremacists. This hand-wringing about the problem of racism being that some people openly state their racism tends to hide that the real problem of racism is that it exists. And the Democrat’s leader (Biden) is just as racist as the Republican’s leader (Trump).

“The white conservatives aren’t friends of the Negro either, but they at least don’t try to hide it. They are like wolves; they show their teeth in a snarl that keeps the Negro always aware of where he stands with them. But the white liberals are foxes, who also show their teeth to the Negro but pretend that they are smiling. The white liberals are more dangerous than the conservatives; they lure the Negro, and as the Negro runs from the growling wolf, he flees into the open jaws of the “smiling” fox.” —Malcolm X
